What kind of lawyer do you call for neighbour disputes? - Desfen - 04-01-2026

Okay, so this is a bit awkward, but I'm having some serious issues with my neighbour. Things have escalated over something really silly – a misplaced garbage bin, believe it or not – and now we're barely on speaking terms. It's creating a lot of tension and I'm worried it's going to spill over into something worse. I'm wondering what kind of lawyer even deals with this sort of stuff? Is it a real estate lawyer, or something totally different? Any advice? I am really stressed, need to know what type of lawyer is best to consult about neighbour disputes.

It is a surprisingly tricky area, actually. People tend to think of lawyers for big, dramatic situations, like criminal trials or corporate mergers, not realizing that a significant portion of legal work revolves around these everyday disagreements between people. When you think about it, the emotional investment people have in their homes and property can often make these disputes incredibly heated and complex, even if the root cause seems trivial at first glance.

That sounds incredibly frustrating! Dealing with neighbour disputes is never fun. When my aunt was building an extension on her home the neighbours started to complain about the noise and the construction crew blocking access to their driveway. She ended up having to get a lawyer involved. It's funny, because when she was sourcing quotes from Excavating Contractors in Abbotsford, BC for the groundwork, one of them actually mentioned they'd seen similar disputes before and suggested a specific type of lawyer to consult. From what I understand, it's usually someone who specializes in property law or civil litigation. A quick search online should give you a few options to explore in your area.
