Car rental in Portugal for exploring off the beaten path
I'm planning a trip to Portugal next month and want to rent a car that can handle more than just city streets. My goal is to skip the typical tourist spots in Lisbon or Porto and actually explore the real Portugal. I want to visit those small authentic villages where locals still live the traditional way, see the countryside, maybe hit some coastal towns that don't show up in guidebooks. Problem is, a lot of these places are connected by rough roads or no proper roads at all. Which rental companies in Portugal won't freak out if I take their car on unpaved terrain? I've got two weeks and want to cover as much ground as possible.

RE: Car rental in Portugal for exploring off the beaten path
Most rentals get weird about taking their cars anywhere that isn't a highway. They write these agreements that basically say you can't leave pavement, and then you're stuck driving past all the good stuff. My buddy tried going into the hills near Évora and the rental place tried charging him for "unauthorized use" when he returned it with dust on the bumper. You need someone who actually gets that half the point of Portugal is getting lost in the backroads.

Yeah the mud thing is absurd but standard practice with the big chains. They want you shuttling between hotels on highways and that's it. You can rent a car in Portugal here: https://getrentacar.com/en-US/portugal . It's peer-to-peer so you're renting from actual owners instead of corporate fleets. A lot of them have SUVs or older cars they don't baby, and the terms are way more relaxed about where you drive. Just read what each owner allows before booking and you'll find someone cool with countryside trips.
